Then PLEASE post SOMETHING to back up your claim. This includes news sources, obituaries, case numbers, etc.

I'd hate to be skeptic about things like this, but I've seen way too many people claim a sickness or death and it was often made up. When confronted or asked about it there's of course the backlash from the user's friends and most of the time I've seen nothing else posted after that. Not even an update (buried/cremated, family). Not even a "thank you for your thoughts and prayers" post.

Stuff like obituaries and/or news posts depending on what happened are posted within a week. Post those when those are up, even if it's a few days later. Obituaries sometimes have the location of the funeral for those who want to visit and give their final respects and condolences.

As far as those who claim that "the parents didn't want what happened to be posted," depending on what happened such as a car accident or a shooting it would still be mentioned in the local newspapers regardless (the name doesn't need to be visible). Illnesses contagious or not would be posted either through a newspaper or a school letter for parents (A girl died from Addison's disease when I was in elementary school and a letter was sent home assure parents that it wasn't contagious).

I used to have a friend who claimed his sister took him to the hospital for cutting himself and trying to commit suicide, and it turned out to be a lie from him changing his story in conversations with three different people. Because of that he's lost my respect and friendship.

I'd hate to have to see some of you be lied to just because your friend wanted attention. This is why I prefer some kind of proof.

Also, giving an opinion or asking for proof in a civil manner is not trolling or being assholish. Just saying.
